Managing Your Child's Health During the Summer

Introduction :

Summer presents a plethora of delights and experiences for youngsters as the temperature rises and the sun shines down. However, it also raises health risks, particularly among children. At Mogre Children Hospital, we recognize the importance of protecting your child's health during the summer months. In this educational blog, we'll look at typical summer problems for kids and offer valuable advice on how to take precautions to guarantee a safe and pleasant season.

1. Dehydration:

Dehydration becomes a major worry during the hot summer months, especially for youngsters who play outside. Dehydration symptoms include dry mouth, lethargy, irritability, and decreased urine output. To avoid dehydration, urge your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during outside activities. Avoid sugary drinks and instead consume hydrating fruits such as watermelon and oranges. Reff[i]

2. Sunburn:

Continuous exposure to the sun's dangerous UV rays can result in painful sunburns, which not only cause agony but also raise the risk of skin cancer later in life. To prevent your child from sunburn, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher at least 30 minutes before they go outside. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more frequently if your youngster is swimming or exercising. Dress your child in lightweight, light-colored clothes that protects their skin, and give them a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for extra protection. Reff[1]

3. Heat Exhaustion and Heatstroke:

Excessive heat can cause heat-related disorders, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which can be fatal if not treated immediately. Heat exhaustion symptoms include dizziness, nausea, headaches, and profuse perspiration, but heatstroke causes a high body temperature, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and loss of consciousness. To avoid these situations, keep your child cool and hydrated, seek shade frequently, and avoid intense activities during the hottest times of the day.

4. Insect Bites and Stings:

Mosquitoes, bees, and other insects thrive during the summer, providing a risk of bites and stings for youngsters. In addition to causing discomfort and itching, bug bites can spread diseases like the West Nile virus and Lyme disease. When spending time outside, make sure your child is wearing bug repellent containing DEET or picaridin, especially in wooded or grassy areas. To minimize exposed skin, dress your youngster in long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toed shoes. Reff[i]

5. Foodborne Illnesses:

Summer picnics, barbecues, and outdoor events present several opportunity for foodborne disease to spread. To avoid food illness, practice excellent food safety behaviors include washing your hands before and after handling food, refrigerating perishable items until ready to consume, and preventing cross-contamination between raw and cooked meals. Place cold meals in a cooler with plenty of ice packs, and toss any leftovers that have been sitting out for more than two hours. Reff[1]

Finally, while summer is full of fun and excitement, it is critical that you take proactive steps to preserve your child's health. By being aware of typical summer issues and taking the required precautions, you can keep your child safe, healthy, and happy throughout the season.
